Once collected, these artifacts are sent back to the main hub of Astro’s Playroom, where you can run and bounce on giant-sized (yet photorealistic) versions of them. It doesn’t stop at the collectibles; some bots pay tribute to past icons. luck8 ‘ll see a bot holding a camera throughout the levels as they record their companions as fellow PlayStation characters. For example, you’ll see bots dressed up as Kratos and Atreus from God of War trying to row a boat. You’ll even see a bot dressed up as Snake from Metal Gear Solid, and when you kick the box, it makes the classic alert sound each time you kick. Puzzle Piece 3/4– At the next checkpoint there are some spots you can bounce on to climb up the platforms. Puzzle Piece 2/4 – Just after the next checkpoint, there are a bunch of explosive enemies on the ground you can light using your ship thrusters. When they explode they destroy the ground, revealing an area with this puzzle piece. Puzzle Piece 1/4 – Directly to the left of the first checkpoint there is a hole you can drop down with a bunch of coins and this puzzle piece in the middle.

For a free game that comes with the PlayStation 5, one largely designed just to showcase all the bells and whistles of Sony’s next-gen DualSense controller, Astro’s Playroom is surprisingly fun. It’s not just a great toybox to experience the DualSense’s haptic feedback, adaptive triggers, microphone, and more, it also delivers the best proof-of-concept pack-in I’ve played since Wii Sports. This is a truly joyous homage to PlayStation history, as well as an experimental platformer I can only hope to see turned into a larger experience during the PS5’s lifetime. Astro Bot Rescue Mission is a 2018 platform video game developed by Japan Studio’s Team Asobi and published by Sony Interactive Entertainment for PlayStation 4’s PlayStation VR headset. It stars a cast of robot characters first introduced in The Playroom, where they appeared as robots that lived inside of the DualShock 4 controller.

These challenges add excitement and depth to the game‚ making trophy completion a rewarding experience. Astro’s Playroom isn’t just a tech demo but a fun little platformer. It’s great that Sony is investing more in the Astro Bot franchise because this could be their answer to the Super Mario series. The level design is more like Super Mario Galaxy and Super Mario 3D World, and that’s a huge compliment. While linear, the space feels open enough to have a ton of details throughout. The basics are you’re traversing the area, trying to find items and coins as you reach the next level.
You also ping Astro into action with a flick of the touchpad and zip up his various special suits by running your finger upwards. Puzzle Pieces 4/4 – In the area with the stomping television, use the two clouds by the checkpoint to jump on top of it when it’s on the ground, then jump to the puzzle piece when it’s in the air. Puzzle Piece 1/4 – Right at the start of the level, cross the tightrope and jump across to reach this puzzle piece. Artifact 2/3 “SingStar Microphone” – From the same red room as puzzle piece 3, drop through the hole in the bottom of the room to find a frozen area. Break through the ice and light the explosive enemy to reveal this artifact.
Cooling Springs is the third zone in Astro’s Playroom, whose Artefacts come from the PlayStation 3 era from 2006 to 2013. It’s coloured blue after the Cross button, more commonly referred to as the X button. This zone’s suit is the Frog Suit, again controlled with the Adaptive Triggers and the SIXAXIS. Memory Meadow is chronologically the first zone in the game, with Artefacts covering the original PlayStation era from 1995 to 2000. The suit in this zone is the Baseball Suit, which you can move around by swiping on the Touch Pad. Take when you’re exiting the beach and you’re walking against the fans that are blowing sand across you. The microphone makes the wind more intense while the vibrations of the sand are felt as the controller feels like a sandstorm.
Puzzle Piece 3/4 – After another couple of checkpoints, you’ll reach a series of second colored rooms. In the red room with the spinning mines, you can find this puzzle piece rotating along between two of them. Puzzle Piece 4/4 – On the main path just after the checkpoint there will be an explosive enemy standing in the middle of the area.
